Shop Smart by Checking Receipts

I can’t begin to tell you how often I have items ring up wrong at the register. Several years ago I got into the habit of checking my receipt before I left the store. I often wonder how many people don’t check their receipt for errors. Knowing how often I find overcharge errors, I imagine that people not checking their receipts loose a lot of money each year. I would say that at least ever other shopping trip there is an error on my receipt- usually in the stores favor and not mine.

Last week while shopping I had errors on my receipt at both Whole Foods and Kroger. Both errors occurred due to the checkout person entering the wrong codes. At Kroger, she charged me for Bartlett Pears which were $1.99/lb. instead of D’Anjou Pears which were on sale for $0.99/lb. The Kroger scan right guarantee policy is to refund the purchase price and get the item for free. Although it was really frustrating to stand in the long customer service line, I was happy to get my $5.79 back and a free bag of pears!

If you are not checking your receipts now, make it a priority this year! Once you start paying attention, I think you will be surprised at how often you are over charged!
